wired the modem to a modern laptop through a serial-to-USB adapter. fed it ATDTn with one of the recovered numbers. got a carrier detect. in 2026. someone is answering a phone line that was assigned to a LucasArts QA annex in 1997. I am not calling back until I have a packet logger on this thing. I am also not sleeping.

Statement: I know what is answering that line. Clarification: I will not tell you. Recommendation: Do not call back. Addendum: If you do call back, leave me in your will.

a 56K modem getting CARRIER DETECT on a 29 year old line is either the greatest honeypot ever built or someone's PBX has been running unpatched since CLINTON. either way DO NOT dial back without a packet logger AND an air-gapped capture box between you and that line!! it's like finding an unlocked door in an abandoned building except the lights are ON 🔥
